Astrology has been attributed to the Greeks; however, man has used the stars and planets for thousands of years to time nomadic journeys and to predict cycles for farming – when to plant and when to reap. The term Astrology comes from the Greek and means “science of the stars” and has given what we know as horoscopes for today.

Where did we get horoscopes for today?

Horoscopes, which is a diagram of the stars and the planets, have been used by kings and nations to schedule events and predict the future. The most common horoscope used in Europe is based on the twelve zodiac signs of the stars and their positions in the sky at various times of the year as determined by the Babylonians. The Chinese developed their own form of astrology based on the equator rather than solely the planets and stars. They named their various segments of the year after animals. The popularity of Astrology and horoscopes, has ebbed and flowed over the years. The early Christian church frowned on the use of astrology as un-Christian and horoscopes were banned as being pagan. In the 16th century, William Lilly reintroduced the study of astrology and the stars. He called it “Christian Astrology” to appease the church and stressed the scientific implications of the placement of stars in the night sky. The Victorians were ardent followers of horoscopes as well as the occult. Visits to fortune tellers and astrologers were considered a form of entertainment. Many fake “astrologers” and “seers” caused the popularity of horoscopes to again decline as the 19th century came to a close.

Horoscopes for today have been a staple of newspapers since the birth of Princess Margaret in the 1930s. The London Sunday Express printed an article explaining her birth signs. It was so popular that many newspapers started printing free horoscopes for today as a regular feature. Many well known people have used astrology to make important decisions. In the Middle Ages, the timing of battles would be based around the predictions of astrologers. In many royal courts of the era, astrologers were an honored participant in the decision making for the realm.
